Knowing what I know now I would have started with Thief, Priest, Mage and turned to Soldier, Merchant, Sage. The end game bosses will do major damage to everyone in the party every turn so you will need it to survive. Honestly, I don't think it matters too much as long as you have two characters with Multiheal and Fullheal that are not the Hero for end game. That and he gets some awesome end game weapons.
Merchant may seem useless with average stats across the board, but he actually levels much faster than other classes so it kind of balances out. I didn't do that and the late game was much harder for it.

You will also need a merchant to progress in late game so I would suggest reclassing the priest to a merchant but only after you have obtained the spells full heal and multiheal. He also isn't great at single target damage. You WILL need either the defense or the healing for late game. If you don't want to use a guide, I suggest a thief.Īlthough, I will say I greatly regret not reclassing my thief to either a soldier or a sage in late game. Basically every screen has a bunch of hidden invisible mini medals and the late game will hide key items in the same way. Also, their ability to tell you how many treasures are left on your level and to reveal hidden treasures are beyond useful. My thief was very useful through out the game as a fast group damage dealer because they can equip all whips and boomerangs. I eventually changed Priest to Merchant and Wizard to Sage at level 20. My setup to start was Hero, Thief, Priest, Wizard. The mobile port was ported to switch too. The missing monster animations and pachisi track are a shame but I still think it's the best option we have. The mobile port is the best looking of the bunch and has the best script but is missing the pachisi track, monster medals, monster animations, and the extra bonus dungeons. It also is the worst looking of the bunch though with a very small view, no backgrounds during battle, and a truncated script to make it work on GBC screen. The GBC version has an extra bonus dungeon, monster animations, the pachisi track, and and monster medals. It has the pachisi track and monster animations but is missing the extra bonus dungeon and monster medals. Fan translations are awesome and all, but I'd prefer the official script on this one. The SNES version is japanese language only so it would be a fan translation.
